Caritas Internationalis elects Archbishop Kikuchi as new president

On May 13, 2023, the 22nd General Assembly of Caritas Internationalis elects Archbishop Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi as the new President of the Church's charitable organization for a four-year term.

Congratulations to the new President of Caritas Internationalis.

The new secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC)

Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi, SVD Archbishop of Tokyo is the new secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC). Archbishop Kikuchi replaces Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-Sang of Macau who resigned from his post earlier this month.

Congratulations to the new Secretary General of FABC.


2017 - Pope appoints a new bishop to Archdiocese of Tokyo, Japan

Pope Francis on Wednesday appointed a new bishop to the Archdiocese of Tokyo in Japan. Bishop Tarcisius Isao Kikuchi, S.V.D currently the bishop of Niigata diocese takes over from Archbishop Peter Takeo Okada who has retired.

On May 1, 1846 the Apostolic Vicariate of Japan was erected by Pope Gregory XVI, and its name was later changed by Pope Pius IX to the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Japan on May 22, 1876.

It was elevated to the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tokyo by Pope Leo XIII on June 15, 1891, with the suffragan sees of Niigata, Saitama, Sapporo, Sendai, and Yokohama.

The Archdiocese of Tokyo covers a land area of 7,344 square kilometers, with a population of 19,200,258 of which 19,200.258 (0.5%) are Catholics (sic - See Note below - N.d.R.). It consists of 75 Churches with 3 bishops and 85 priests, 55 communities of men Religious and 151 communities of women Religious.

Resignation of archbishop of Tōkyō, Japan, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Tōkyō, Japan, presented by H.E. Msgr. Peter Takeo Okada.

The Pope has appointed as archbishop of Tōkyō, Japan, H.E. Msgr. Tarcisius Isao Kikuchi, S.V.D., currently bishop of the diocese of Niigata.


Curriculum vitae

  • Born in Iwate Prefecture in 1958;
  • He was ordained priest in 1986;
  • He served as a missionary in Ghana for 13 years;
  • After his return to Japan in 1999, he was elected Provincial superior;
  • In 2004 Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Niigata;
  • His Episcopal Ordination was on Sept. 20, 2004.
  • In 2017, he was pointed Archbishop of Tokyo by Pope Francis;
  • Between 2011 to 2019, Archbishop Kikuchi served Asia’s Churches as regional president of Caritas Asia;
  • He was also a member of FABC’s Office of Human Development.
